Exploring Community in Early Learning

Building connections, belonging, and confidence from the very beginning.

Learning begins with relationships. At the start of the school year, children in Learning Care schools explore our Learn as We Grow® curriculum concept of Community. This important first learning experience helps children build connections with their teachers and classmates. It also includes families to help create a strong sense of belonging.

Community is all around us in the people who care for us, the friendships we form, and the routines that help us feel safe and secure. As children learn about themselves and others, they begin to understand that they are an important part of a group. These early experiences help lay the foundation for positive relationships, confidence, and social-emotional growth.

Why this concept matters

Children thrive when they feel connected and valued. Exploring community helps them understand how people work together, support one another, and contribute to a shared environment. As children explore community, they begin to:

• Develop a sense of belonging
• Build trusting relationships with teachers and peers
• Learn classroom routines and expectations
• Practice cooperation, kindness, and empathy
• Gain confidence in sharing their ideas and experiences

These skills support children's social-emotional development and create a strong foundation for future learning both in school and beyond.

How we bring it to life in the classroom

In our Learn as We Grow® approach, community is often one of the first concepts children explore because strong relationships provide the foundation for all learning. Our teachers intentionally create welcoming environments where children feel safe, supported, and valued. In the classroom, you might see children:

• Learning classmates' names and sharing information about themselves
• Participating in morning meetings and group discussions
• Practicing classroom routines that provide consistency and predictability
• Working together on projects and cooperative play experiences
• Exploring similarities and differences among friends and families
• Celebrating the unique contributions each child brings to the classroom

Through conversations, stories, play, and daily interactions, children learn that everyone belongs and has an important role in the community.

Try it at home

You can help strengthen your child's understanding of community with simple everyday activities including:

• Talk about helpers: Discuss the people who help your family and community, such as teachers, firefighters, healthcare workers, and neighbors.
• Share family traditions: Talk about routines and traditions that help your family stay connected.
• Practice kindness: Encourage your child to help others through small acts such as sharing, helping with chores, or writing a thank-you note.
• Explore your neighborhood: Take a walk and identify places and people that are part of your community.
• Celebrate uniqueness: Invite family members to share something special about themselves, helping children appreciate both similarities and differences.

These meaningful moments help children develop a greater understanding of connection, responsibility, and belonging while building the confidence and resilience they need to navigate new experiences.
