Did you know grapefruit, despite its nutrient-packed goodness, is the least purchased citrus fruit? We’d like to shine a spotlight on how to enjoy it using a simple trick and share three easy recipes that will turn your grapefruit into a delightful treat.
February is National Grapefruit Month. That’s probably because they’re at the peak of ripeness in areas where they’re grown, including Florida and Texas. Grapefruit is loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fiber. It’s also high in vitamins A and C and low in sugar and calories.
I know what you’re thinking—but it’s so bitter! Yes, grapefruit is often associated with an unappealing bitterness, but don’t let that deter you. Start by selecting sweeter varieties like the Rio Red or Rio Star, Flame, Oro Blanco, or Ruby Red.
If those options are still too bitter, don’t reach for the sugar bowl! Sugar can overpower the natural sweetness. It may seem counterintuitive, but a pinch of salt may be all you need! The science behind the suggestion is simple. The ions in the salt block the bitter sensors on your tongue allowing the sweet flavor of the grapefruit to come through. Go ahead, give it a try!
Caramelized Cinnamon Grapefruit
- Cut your grapefruit in half and place on a baking sheet, flesh side up.
- Optional: Cut along each section to separate the fruit from the membrane. This will make it easier to scoop it out after you’re done.
- For young assistants: Lightly sprinkle the top of each half with cinnamon.
- Pop under a preheated broiler for 3 minutes to caramelize the surface.
- Enjoy warm or with a dollop of yogurt on top!
Grapefruit Banana Raspberry Smoothie
- 3 bananas
- 2 cups raspberries
- 1 grapefruit, peeled
- 1 Tbsp. honey or maple syrup
- 1 ½ cups grapefruit juice
- 1 cup ice
- For young assistants: Have children peel the bananas and measure all the ingredients. Put each item directly into a blender.
- Cover and blend until smooth. (If necessary, slowly add water until you reach your desired consistency.)
- Sip and enjoy!
Tri-Color Citrus Salad
- 2 large oranges
- 1 large pink or red grapefruit
- 1 cara cara or blood orange
- 3 Tbsp. olive or avocado oil
- 3 Tbsp. pomegranate juice
- 1 Tbsp. red wine vinegar
- ½ tsp. honey or maple syrup
- ½ cup pomegranate arils
- Pinch of salt
- Peel citrus, removing as much pith as possible. (That’s the spongy white part.)
- Slice into wheels, removing any seeds. Cut in half again so you have half-circle shapes.
- For young assistants: Have children arrange the colorful citrus pieces on a serving dish.
- Sprinkle with salt.
- Whisk together the remaining ingredients (oil, pomegranate juice, vinegar, and honey or maple syrup) until combined. Drizzle over fruit slices.
- For young assistants: Have children sprinkle pomegranate arils over the top before serving.
